There is something special about late summer in the Rogue Valley. The days are long and warm, the local farms are overflowing with ripe produce, and the vineyards are lush with grapes about ready for harvest. Whether you are a foodie, a wine enthusiast, or just someone who loves a good farmers market, this is the time of year when Southern Oregon truly shines. I have put together a guide to some of my favorite wineries, markets, and farm-to-table experiences in Medford Oregon and the broader Rogue Valley to help you make the most of the season.
Rogue Valley Wine Country: A Hidden Gem in Southern Oregon
The Rogue Valley is one of Oregon's premier wine-growing regions, and late summer is the perfect time to explore the tasting rooms and vineyard views. The warm days and cool nights create ideal conditions for grapes, producing bold reds and crisp whites that rival more famous wine regions up north. Best of all, the pace here feels relaxed and welcoming, not pretentious.
Abacela Winery
Located in the Umpqua Valley just north of the Rogue Valley, Abacela is a true pioneer. They were the first to prove that Tempranillo could thrive in Oregon, and today their Spanish and southern French varietals are among the best in the state. Their tasting room overlooks the estate vineyards, and the staff is knowledgeable without being stuffy. It is an easy and rewarding drive from Medford.
Troon Vineyard in the Applegate Valley
Troon Vineyard is a biodynamic estate that takes a thoughtful, holistic approach to winemaking. The property is beautiful in a quiet, natural way, and their wines (especially the Vermentino and the estate red blends) are outstanding. The tasting room experience here is unhurried, and the staff loves to talk about the land as much as the wine. If you appreciate a winery with soul, put Troon on your list.
Dancin Vineyards
Overlooking the Rogue Valley near Medford, Dancin Vineyards is known for award-winning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The outdoor patio is a wonderful spot to spend a late summer afternoon, and the property is dog-friendly, so you do not have to leave your four-legged friend at home. They often have live music on weekends, adding to the welcoming atmosphere.
Kriselle Cellars
Kriselle Cellars sits right along the Rogue River and is famous not just for its wines but also for its wood-fired pizzas made with local ingredients. There is something about sipping a glass of their Viognier while enjoying a pizza overlooking the river that just feels like the Rogue Valley at its best. It is a family-friendly spot that locals and visitors alike return to again and again.
RoxyAnn Winery
Set in a historic 1908 barn just outside Medford, RoxyAnn Winery combines old-world charm with modern winemaking. Their tasting room is rustic and inviting, and the vineyard views stretch across the valley toward the surrounding mountains. They specialize in bold reds like Syrah and Merlot, and the relaxed vibe makes it easy to settle in and stay for a while.
"The Rogue Valley is one of those places where you can taste the seasons. The food, the wine, the community, it all comes together in a way that is hard to find anywhere else."
Farmers Markets: Where the Rogue Valley Comes Together
If you really want to understand a community, visit its farmers market. The Rogue Valley Growers and Crafters Market runs markets in Medford, Ashland, and other towns throughout the season, and late summer is when they are at their absolute best. This is where you will find locals catching up over coffee, families stocking up on the week's produce, and artisans showing off their craft.
Medford Thursday Market
Running every Thursday from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM through November 19, the Medford Thursday Market is the heart of the Rogue Valley Growers and Crafters Market. Located at the Medford Armory parking lot, you will find dozens of vendors selling everything from heirloom tomatoes and just-picked peaches to artisan breads, local honey, and fresh flowers. Go early for the best selection, and bring a cooler if you plan to stock up.
Ashland Saturday and Tuesday Markets
The Ashland Saturday Market (8:30 AM to 1:00 PM through October 31) is a beloved tradition in this vibrant college town. The downtown plaza fills with colorful tents, live music, and the aroma of fresh-baked goods. On Tuesdays through November 24, the Ashland Tuesday Market offers a smaller but equally excellent selection. Both are wonderful excuses to spend a morning in Ashland.
Grants Pass Growers Market
Further west in Grants Pass, the Growers Market at Northwest 4th and F Streets brings together local farmers and artisans in a friendly, small-town setting. The Rogue River runs through town, so you can easily make a day of it by hitting the market and then exploring the riverfront parks and trails.
Farm-to-Table Dining: Eating with the Seasons
One of the great joys of living in the Rogue Valley is that restaurants here truly cook with the seasons. The farm-to-table ethos runs deep in Southern Oregon, and late summer is when the menus are at their most exciting. Many of the wineries I mentioned also offer food pairings, but there are a few standouts worth seeking out.
In Medford, downtown restaurants feature seasonal menus that highlight whatever local farms are harvesting. In Ashland, the farm-to-table scene is even more pronounced, with chefs building menus around the weekly farmers market haul. And if you are looking for a casual yet memorable experience, Kriselle Cellars' wood-fired pizza with seasonal toppings is hard to beat, especially on a warm evening overlooking the river.
Make a Weekend of It
One of the best things about the Rogue Valley is how easy it is to build a full weekend around the local food and wine scene. Start your Saturday morning at the Ashland farmers market, grab a pastry and coffee, then head to the Applegate Valley for an afternoon of wine tasting at Troon, Red Lily, or one of the other boutique vineyards. Wrap up the day with dinner at a farm-to-table restaurant or a pizza and wine pairing at Kriselle Cellars along the river.
Sunday? Hit the Medford Thursday Market on your way to an afternoon hike on the outdoor adventures trail network across Southern Oregon. The combination of great food, fine wine, and the incredible natural beauty of this region is what makes the Rogue Valley such a special place to call home.
What Makes the Rogue Valley Food and Wine Scene Special
After nearly 30 years in real estate and having lived in markets across the country, I can honestly say the food and wine community here is different. It is not about flashy labels or expensive tasting menus. It is about people who care deeply about the land, who take pride in what they grow and make, and who welcome you into their tasting rooms and market stalls like an old friend.
That sense of community and connection is a big part of why I love helping people find their place in the Rogue Valley. Whether you are moving here from out of state or looking for a home that puts you closer to your favorite market and wineries, I would be honored to help you find exactly what you are looking for.
